Blog Assignment

Hello All!

For my WebQuest, I have been considering two topics: World War One or the Industrial Revolution.  Can you tell that I am a Social Studies major? : )

The reason I have been considering World War One is because I am doing a project in another class, where I am creating a video of myself lecturing, and my topic for it is World War One.  In addition, I find World War One fascinating.  From trench foot to dough boys, there is so much to learn, and there are several interesting stories about World War One.  There is so much you can do for lesson planning with World War One to make it fun and interesting to learn about for your students.

The reason that I am considering doing my WebQuest on the Industrial Revolution is because there are so many interesting things about it!  I could do a WebQuest about the Meat Inspection Act, Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle", the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, Woman's Sufferage, Jacob Riis's "How the Other Half Lives", the list can go on and on.  I enjoyed learning about this time period while I was in school, and I know that there are many ways to make it fun to learn about for my future students.

I could definitely see myself using a delicious account with my future students.  One way I could see myself using the account would be to have all of my students sign up for an account, and include me in their network.  In my bookmarks, I would have a list of sites that they could use for references, research, etc.  I would also have my own website link in my delicious account.  That way, if students were absent, they could check out what they missed, or still be able to work on an assignment from home.  It helps to really round out  the whole classroom community feel.  I might assign a research project for the students, and have a list of websites they could use posted on my delicious account.

In addition, having a delicious account is wonderful for my professional development.  For example, I could be away at a seminar for teaching and find a list of wonderful websites that I could use in my classroom or in my lesson planning, and I could immediately post them to my account so I wouldn't forget them.

I could also see myself using blogs in my classroom.  Right now, I could see the main objective for my blog would be to keep my student's updated about what's going on in the classroom.  I could post homework assignments (really helpful for those who are absent), directions for projects (in case they lose the ones I hand out in class), rubrics (helpful for parents if they have a question on my grading methods), and reminders about upcoming events.  The possibilities are endless.

That's all I have for now!

  2. I completely agree with you about the usefulness of blogs in the classroom. I think they could be used as a great resource for students and parents. The more ways to get your information out, the better! Great blog post.

  3. World War one would be an interesting subject to make a Webquest on due to the vast amount of information to choose from. Do you have a particular subject that your looking at within the war or just in general? Using a blog for upcoming events sound like a good idea, just make sure all the students subscribed to the blog.

  4. I like your ideas for a webquest. I feel that social studies really lends itself to this type of assignment During my first student teaching placement, I created a webquest about World War 2. It was a little different in that I only used one website, but it worked extremely well!! I found an awesome website that was completely interactive and it allowed the students to experience daily life during World War 2. They answered a series of questions while working on the webquest and then we transfered their learning to an activity. As the students learned about rationing during the activity, we then simualted making a meal during World War 2 and the students had to use ration tickets. I think that webquests are so cool because they can be tailored to fit the needs of almost any lesson and allow for student exploration. It sounds as though you are off to a good start with your ideas and I am sure that you will be able to design an effective website relating to either topic :).
